What is a System Boiler?

Posted on 12/11/2020

Are you on the hunt for a new boiler? Then you’ve probably discovered there are quite a few kinds out there. You’ll find helpful guides to combi boilers and conventional boilers [JP1] elsewhere on our website – but here we’re going to focus on the nuts and bolts of system boilers.

What is a system boiler?

A system boiler is also known as a sealed system boiler. It’s made up of a boiler and a hot water cylinder, which is normally stored alongside the boiler or in an airing cupboard.

How does a system boiler work?

Cold water enters the boiler directly from the mains supply. The water is heated via a heat exchanger, which transfers energy from the gas jets to the water. When the water is hot, it’s pumped into a cylinder where it’s stored until needed. A system boiler is a sealed system which means it benefits from condensing technology which is when energy is recycled from exhaust gases to preheat cold water. This lowers your carbon footprint.

What is a system boiler useful for?

The big advantage of a system boiler is that, because of the hot water cylinder, it can store and deliver large amounts of hot water. This is particularly useful if you live in a large property with multiple bathrooms.

What are the different types of system boilers?

Let’s take a look at the four different kinds of system boiler:

Electric system boilers

Electric system boilers are efficient, economical and environmentally-friendly. If your electricity comes from renewables (like solar) then you can heat your home and hot water while being kinder to the planet.

Oil system boilers

Oil is more fuel-efficient than gas so there’s a better return on every unit of energy. However, oil takes up space and will need to be stored in a storage tank on your property.

Gas system boilers

Gas system boilers plug straight into the gas mains and require a Gas safety certificate as well as an annual service.

LPG system boilers

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) system boilers are a good alternative for homes that can’t connect to the gas mains. The gas is transported to your home and stored on your property. LPG system boilers are more common in the countryside.

What is the difference between a system and a conventional boiler?

A system boiler only needs a boiler and a cylinder, whereas regular boilers also need header tanks in the attic which feed water to the hot water cylinder and maintain the water level in the radiators.

What are the best system boilers?

Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Bosch are some of the brands you should look out for when choosing your boiler. They’re all available through Local Heroes.

How much does a system boiler cost?

System boiler prices depend on a few things like how long the warranty is as well as its heating output. Prices start at around £500 then there are installation costs on top of that too.
