What is a Conventional Boiler?
Replacing a boiler is a big decision. So we’re here to make things a little easier. Elsewhere on our site you’ll find helpful info about combi boilers and system boilers . But here you’ll find all you need to know about conventional boilers – and how Local Heroes can get yours sorted.
What is a conventional boiler?
Conventional boilers are also known as regular boilers. They’re made up of multiple components including a boiler, heating controls, a hot water cylinder and a cold water storage cistern, as well as a feed and expansion cistern. They are the oldest kind of boiler you will find and they’re ideal for homes that have a traditional central heating system.
How does a conventional boiler work?
A regular boiler needs a large tank of cold water (usually installed in an attic) to supply it with cold water from the mains. Water is fed down to the boiler where a heat exchanger warms it up. The heated water is then pumped to a hot water storage cylinder (which is usually in an airing cupboard) where it is stored until you turn on your heating, a shower or a tap.
What is a conventional boiler useful for?
Conventional boilers are perfect for large homes because they can store so much hot water. If different bathrooms are being used at the same time while someone’s doing the dishes downstairs, everyone should have all the hot water they need. Also, if you live in an old home with a traditional heating system, installing a conventional boiler is often more cost effective.
What are the different types of conventional boilers?
Oil or gas conventional boilers are the most common kind.
What is the difference between a conventional and a system boiler?
As we’ve mentioned, conventional boilers require water tanks in the attic. System boilers just need a boiler and a cylinder. This is usually stored alongside the boiler or separately in an airing cupboard.
