What is a Combi Boiler?
Choosing to install a new boiler in your home is a big decision and you may be unsure where to start. There are a few different types out there and, in this article, we’re just going to focus on one: the combi boiler. Read on to find out whether one could be right for your home – and how Local Heroes can help you get it installed for the best price.
What is a combi boiler?
A combi boiler is a super-efficient water heater combined with – hence ‘combi’ – a central heating boiler, in one single compact unit.
How does a combi boiler work?
Combi boilers work by instantly heating water from the mains on demand, which means you only heat water as and when you need it. With combi boilers there’s no waiting around for the tank to reheat and no chance of running out of hot water.
What is a combi boiler useful for?
Single-unit combi boilers are very compact and can fit into small spaces like a kitchen cupboard. This makes combi boilers well suited to small to medium-sized homes where space is limited. Because you only heat water when you need it, combi boilers are both cost and energy efficient. Generally, combi boilers are more efficient than conventional boilers. They are also less expensive to install.
What are the different types of combi boilers?
There are four types of combi boilers:
Electric combi boilers
Electric combi boilers are arguably the most efficient out there. They’re also very economical (there are no gas meter standing charges) and environmentally-friendly. You can integrate them with solar PV panels so your heating and hot water is all powered by the sun.
Oil combi boilers
Oil combi boilers are oil powered so they are less environmentally-friendly than electric ones. They require a constant oil supply which is delivered and stored in a tank on your property. Oil combis are more fuel-efficient than gas so there’s a better return on every unit of energy.
Gas combi boilers
Natural gas combi boilers are the most common in the UK and tend to heat water quicker than oil combi boilers. They require Gas Safe certificates and generally need to be serviced every year.
LPG combi boilers
LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. Unlike natural gas, it’s delivered by road then stored in a tank on your property. An LPG combi boiler is a good, highly efficient solution for people in off-mains gas areas, like the countryside. LPG combi boilers also have a lower carbon footprint than oil combi boilers.
What are the best combi boilers?
Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Ideal are three of the UK’s favourite boiler brands – and they’re all available through Local Heroes.
How much does a combi boiler cost?
Combi boiler prices vary depending on the size of your home, the power your boiler provides and the length of the warranty. Basic, budget boilers cost between £600 and £900. For a mid-range model expect to pay between £900 and £1200 – and for a premium model, up to £2000. There will likely be installation costs on top of that too.
