How to find a boiler engineer near me
We all know that boilers are expensive pieces of equipment. So if a year’s gone by and you haven’t had your boiler serviced – or it’s not working as well as it used to – it’s always worth getting it checked. Here are some tips for finding a dependable boiler engineer near you.
Get a personal recommendation
A solid recommendation from friends or neighbours you trust is a great place to start. So ask around. If anyone you know has used a boiler engineer that they were really happy with, pick up the phone and give them a call. Or if you only have a name, chances are you’ll be able to find them online. If they're already a Local Hero, check our directory where you can book them directly and get a recommended tradesperson plus a 12 month guarantee backed by British Gas.
Be careful online
If you can’t get a recommendation, it could be time to head online. But beware of rogue operators! The Gas Safe register warns that a worryingly high number of unqualified engineers advertise online – or in local newspapers. You should never have a non-Gas Safe registered tradesperson work on anything involving gas in your home, so be sure to verify their registration before booking with them.
Ask the right questions
When you speak to a boiler engineer there are a few questions you should ask to make sure you’re in safe hands – and everything is in order for the warranty.
Are they on the Gas Safe Register?
As mentioned above, to do any work on your boiler, your engineer needs to be Gas Safe-registered. Even if you have a glowing recommendation from someone you trust you should still ask for the engineer’s license number. Then you can check it on the Gas Safe website.
Will the system be power flushed?
If you’re having a new boiler installed, it’s really important your engineer gives your system a power flush to remove any debris or sludge that has built up or it could damage your system.
If you don’t power flush the system, your manufacturer could potentially invalidate your boiler warranty.
Complete the benchmark page
On the manufacturer’s instruction manual there will be a benchmark page. Make sure your engineer has filled it out when they’ve finished the installation. You need this for your servicing schedule and to make sure your warranty remains valid.
